Colorado tollways to go solar

The E-470, the longest solar-powered toll road in the United States, has won the Overall Award for Excellence from the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association. It has been over a year since switch-on for the highway that loops around the eastern perimeter of the Denver metropolitan area in Colorado. A significant portion of the road’s expenditure was given to electricity, so the use of solar power has cut operational costs. The highway agency has a twenty-year power purchase agreement with the energy company that implemented and owns the solar power system. The use of solar power saved approximately $20,000 in its first year of operation. The energy company involved is working on developing similar systems throughout the United States.
