Focal point

In the United States, there is a great diversity of technology used in tolling operations, which makes interoperability a challenge. In July, the Alliance for Toll Interoperability (ATI) and Secure Interagency Flow LLC (SIF) announced an agreement to supply, implement, and operate an interoperability hub that will extend nationwide. ATI was established in 2009 to promote interoperability between states to benefit both customers and member agencies. Work on the new interoperability hub began two years ago, and a pilot was held in 2012. The hub will allow agencies to collect transactions across state lines. The system is comparable with the European Electronic Toll Service in that it guarantees payments to toll agencies. The implementation of an interoperability hub will help agencies to see an increase in revenue.
