Methodology for Installation and Maintenance of Restraint Systems for Motorcyclists

This methodology was produced with the financial support of the Technological Agency of the Czech Republic and is one of the outcomes of the project No. TA01011298 “Implementation of the protection system for motorcyclists form the effects of impact with the steel barriers” (acronym OCHMOT). The aim of this project is to develop, pilot and assess a protection measure for the improvement of road traffic safety of motorcyclists who get to contact with a restrain system during an accident – steel crash barrier, which, in its current design, is in many cases hazardous or even aggressive solid obstacle for this specific group of road users. One of the aims of this projects is to describe, with the use of the methodology, protection systems (particularly to road administrators and owners) and basic principles for the installation and maintenance of a protection system against the sliding under the crash barrier by motorcyclists and against their impact to the bearing structure of the crash barriers. The methodology deals with general principles for the installation and maintenance of the protection system for motorcyclists. Correct installation and maintenance are a prerequisite for the right function of the installed protection system. In contrast, failure to follow the principles for the installation and maintenance may lead to its reduced lifespan, and what is more, the protection system may in extreme cases become a hazardous feature, particularly for motorcyclists.
