Effective Single Stream MOVA Control of Roundabouts

The efficiency of Microprocessor Optimized Vehicle Actuation (MOVA) at small roundabouts has been questioned because of wasted green time due to its inability to overlap successive entry greens. Micro-stage control, a new concept for controlling roundabouts under a single controller stream using MOVA, sought to address issues associated with wasted green time. Previous modeling showed that MOVA with micro-stages performed comparably to optimized short cycle fixed-time plans. Further modeling work was done to prove the potential effectiveness of the strategy by comparing MOVA both with and without micro-stages. The strategy was then applied at a roundabout in South Gloucestershire. This article presents the results of the supplementary modeling work, explains its implementation, presents monitoring data that demonstrates it benefits, and details the results of before and after monitoring at the site. Refinement of the strategy is also considered along with the potential for application at other traffic signal control sites.
