Guidelines for Micro Simulation Modelling; Calibration and Validation; An Examination of Gaps, Issues and Needs

In an effort to determine the use of and need for more or better modeling guidelines, the MULTITUDE project is examining methods and tools to support the use, calibration, and validation of traffic simulation models. Existing documents have been reviewed and a number of issues have been identified that may be used to revise existing documents. These issues include the application of guidelines to determine standards for microsimulation projects and the steps necessary to ensure a robust model. It has been determined that progress in this area is not clear and that the issues range from the straightforward to those difficult to isolate. The implications are that if decision-makers are uncertain of the standard to which the models have been calibrated and applied, there will be resultant uncertainty over model output. Understanding the source of uncertainty has only recently been documented, but understanding and reducing it is vital to the success of the modeling project. Consequently, it is believed that the best practice is an awareness of different documents and a sound understanding of the complexity of every issue.
