Ocean.data.gov: A portal to regional marine planning data

A single dedicated information portal has been developed to enable information access across wide platforms from one location. Ocean.data.gov began in 2011. It currently offers federal data solely, but it is expected to contain non-federal data in the future. The website allows access to regional marine planning data in an effort to help decision makers to make better decisions using scientific information. The data provided includes maps, raster nautical charts, bathymetry, maritime boundaries, navigation obstructions, and automatic identification system information. The portal is also a centralized hub for collaboration efforts involving the nine National Ocean Policy U.S. marine planning regions. These regions include the Northeast, Great Lakes, Pacific Islands, Gulf of Mexico, Alaska/Arctic, West Coast, Caribbean, Mid-Atlantic, and South Atlantic. This is a valuable resource, as timely, up to the minute data about how animals and people use the Great Lakes, our oceans and coasts are necessary for fruitful marine planning efforts.
