HELICOPTERS FOR SHIP-TO-SHORE MOVEMENT OF CARGO IN THE CANADIAN ARCTIC
The historical development of the Canadian Arctic known as the "Middle North", has been slow and hampered by the lack of transportation. Supplies to outposts in this area until recent years were limited to one ship sailing every other year. Even then the open navigation season was only four to six weeks and weather conditions often restricted ship movements and cargo operations. The only method of cargo offloading was by lighter to a beach. Stevedores had to be carried aboard the supply ship. In search of a better method, the unitization of cargo and helicopter lift to the beach was investigated and tried in an effort to improve delivery and reduce costs. The detailed cost analysis of this effort is documented in this report.
