POSSIBLE APPLICATIONS OF NEW TYPES OF TRACTION SYSTEMS FOR LONG-DISTANCE TRANSPORT
EINSATZMOEGLICHKEITEN NEUARTIGER BAHNSYSTEMS FEUR DEN FERNVERKEHR
The maximum possible speeds of conventional wheel/rail systems are probably of the order of 300 to 400 km/h. Among other things, a limit is imposed by the propulsion capacity that can be installed in the vehicle. New techniques employing air or magnet cushions and linear motors permit an advance into higher speed ranges. Above speeds of 400 to 500 km/h, direct thrust transmission by means of stationary linear motors must be employed owing to weight restrictions and power collection problems.
