MOTORS AND DRIVE SYSTEMS FOR HIGH SPEED RAIL VEHICLES
MOTOREN UND ANTIRIEBE FUER HOCHGESCHWINDIGKEITS-SCHIENENFAHRZEUGE
On high-speed rail vehicles, two factors are decisive for the motor and drive system: The power requirements which increase with the third power of the speed, and the vertical acceleratin originating from the track which increases with the square of the speed. The resulting tendency to higher weights is contrasted by the demand for lower axle loads at increasing speeds in order to reduce the stressing of the track. This calls for maximum capability at minimum weight. The authors review suitable motor and drive systems and indicate their limitations.
