STUDY OF ACTIVE MAGNETIC SUSPENSION USING CONTROLLED DC MAGNETS- OUTLINE DESIGN OF A 30-PASSENGER VEHICLE FOR URBAN TRANSPORT

THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS SUTDY WERE TWOFOLD. THE FIRST ONE WAS TO EXAMINE THE TECHNOLOGY ON THE BASIS OF WORK IN THE FIELD AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SUSSEX AND TO SHOW THAT A SYSTEM OF MAGNETICALLY SUSPENDED VEHICLES IS FEASIBLE WITHIN THE SPECIFICATIONS LAID DOWN IN THIS DOCUMENT. THE SECOND OBJECTIVE WAS TO CONSIDER THE DESIGN OF A 30-PASSENGER VEHICLE EVOLVED FOR THE FIRST OBJECTIVE IN THE LIGHT OF A REAL LIFE SITUATION SUCH AS THE A38 BIRMINGHAM CORRIDOR, AND TO SHOW IN A COMPARATIVE STUDY WHETHER MAGNETIC SUSPENSION TECHNOLOGY CONFERS AND ADVANTAGES OVER THOSE ALREADY PROPOSED OR OVER ANY OTHER POSSIBLE ALTERNATIVE WHEELED, BUT GUIDED, SYSTEMS. THE 30-PASSENGER VEHICLE DESIGNED FOR THIS STUDY CAN BE EITHER CEILING OR FLOOR SUPPORTED. HOWEVER, THE LATTER VERSION MAY BE MORE SUITABLE FOR THE CORRIDER TYPE OF APPLICATION. THE DESIGN CONSIDERED IS CAPABLE OF CARRYING A PAYLOAD OF 2000 KG AND WEIGHS 6250 KG. IT HAS A 60 KW LINEAR INDUCTION MOTOR AS A PROPOSION UNIT, GIVING IT A MAXIMUM SPEED OF OVER 70 M.P.H. THE COST OF A PRODUCTION TYPE CAN BE MODIFIED TO EITHER A 1000 KG VEHICLE (4PASSENGERS) OR 10,000 KG (60 PASSENGERS). /TRRL/
