OPTIMIZATION OF BUS OPERATION IN RURAL AREAS

THE REPORT CONSIDERS PRESENT SYSTEMS AND TECHNIQUES OF BUS OPERATION, POSSIBLE WAYS OF IMPROVING THESE SYSTEMS, NEW TECHNOLOGY, AND THE ADMINISTRATIVE ORGANIZATION OF PRESENT TRANSPORT. THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTORS AFFECTING PASSENGERS, BUS OPERATORS, AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC ARE DISCUSSED, WITH PARTICULAR EMPHASIS ON CRITERIA FOR THE OPTIMIZATION OF BUS OPERATION IN URBAN AREAS. SUBSEQUENT CHAPTERS DEAL WITH EMPIRICAL APPROACHES TO IMPROVING BUS OPERATION, IMPROVEMENTS BY BUS OPERATORS, IMPROVEMENTS THROUGH URBAN PLANNING, AND TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT. NEW SYSTEMS AND NEW TECHNOLOGY ARE DISCUSSED AND DESCRIBED IN DETAIL IN THE ANNEXES. THE CONCLUSIONS OF THE REPORT CONTAIN PROPOSALS FOR PRACTICAL IMPROVEMENTS BY BOTH OPERATORS AND LOCAL AND GOVERNMENTAL AUTHORITIES. SEVEN PROJECTS FOR FUTURE RESEARCH TO BE UNDERTAKEN ON A NATIONAL OR CO-OPERATIVE BASIS ARE PROPOSED. /AUTHOR/
