SYSTEM-TIE FREQUENCY CHANGERS FOR THE GERMAN FEDERAL RAILWAYS

NETZKUPPLUNGSUMFORMER FUER DIE DEUTSCHE BUNDESBAHN

To compensate for load fluctuations in the 16 2/3-Hz traction system, the German Federal Railways employ system-tie frequency changers consisting of a three-phase induction motor with control cascade and a 16 2/3-Hz single-phase synchronous generator. In the pre-war and post-war years Siemens supplied various system-tie frequency changers for traction power supplies. The standard size with a rating of 25 MW, developed for the German Federal Railways after 1950, has been retained to the present day. With the previous frequency changers, both the single-phase generator and the three-phase induction motor were excited and controlled by rotating machines. In the new frequency changers this function is performed by electronic equipment.
