POWER SUPPLY OF DC AND AC TRACTION SYSTEMS
STROMVERSORGUNG VON GLEICHSTROM-UND WECHSELSTROMBAHNEN
Electric railways operating on d.c. or single-phase a.c. at 50 Hz are generally fed from the public power supply system. In the case of single-phase a.c. systems operating at 16 2/3 Hz, the power is generated by special generators and distributed in a separate supply system. System-tie frequency converters offer advantages for peak load coverage and control. The railway power supply systems are controlled from central points by remote control. Power is fed to the moving vehicles through a contact system. At high operating speeds the demands on the quality of power collection rise rapidly. Extensive development work must be completed in this direction.
