THE FRENCH DEVELOPMENT, URBA, AN INTERMEDIATE CAPACITY RAPID TRANSIT SYSTEM, WAS TESTED IN THE RINGWAY-LANGLEY CORRIDOR OF THE SOUTH EAST LANCASHIRE-NORTH EAST CHESIRE /SELNCE) CONURBATION WHICH INCLUDES MANCHESTER AND ITS ENVIRONS. THIS REPORT CONTAINS THE FINDINGS OF A STUDY CARRIED OUT TO: (1) DETERMINE THE TECHNICAL, OPERATING AND ENVIRONMENTAL CHARACTERISTICS OF URBA; (2) DESIGN (WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE SELNEC MODEL) FEASIBLE RAPID TRANSIT SCHEMES BASED ON URBA FOR THE RINGWAY-LANGLEY CORRIDERS; (3) ASSESS THE VISUAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ACCEPTABILITY OF SUCH SYSTEMS; AND (4) COMMENT ON THE PRACTICABILITY AND ATTRACTIVENESS OF URBA AND SIMILAR SYSTEMS. /TRRL/
