USE OF MODELS IN URBAN TRANSPORTATION PLANNING

THE REPORT DESCRIBES THE MOST COMMONLY USED MODELS IN URBAN TRANSPORTATION PLANNING. A BACKGROUND ON URBAN TRANSPORTATION PLANNING IS GIVEN INCLUDING CHANGES IN PLANNING OBJECTIVES AND THE EFFECTS OF FEDERAL LEGISLATION. GENERAL CONCEPTS AND PROBLEMS IN THE USE OF THE MODELS ARE ALSO PRESENTED. GREATER EMPHASIS SHOULD BE PLACED ON ANALYTICAL TECHNQIUES AS OPPOSED TO THE MODELS THEMSELVES. ATTENTION SHOULD BE GIVEN TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF SMALL, EASY TO USE MODELS WHICH ADDRESS SPECIFIC PROBLEMS IN PLANNING. RESEARCH INTO THE INTERACTION BETWEEN LAND USE AND TRANSPORTATION SHOULD BE CONDUCTED WITH THE OBJECTIVES OF PROVIDING INSIGHT AND INFORMATION WHICH CAN BE EFFECTIVELY USED BY URBAN TRANSPORTATION PLANNERS.
