LORAN C AUTOMATIC VEHICLE MONITORING SYSTEM. VOLUME I: STUDY RESULTS

THE REPORT DESCRIBES BASELINE SYSTEM CONFIGURATION, SYSTEM DESIGN, BASELINE SYSTEMS COSTS, SYSTEM VARIATIONS, DEMONSTRATION EQUIPMENT, AND EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS. THIS AUTOMATIC VEHICLE MONITORING (AVM) APPLICATION WAS DEVELOPED TO FACILITATE THE LOCATION OF FLEET VEHICLES IN AN URBAN SITUATION, SUCH AS TRANSIT BUSES. LORAN C SYSTEMS EMPLOY LORAN (LONG-RANGE RADIO NAVIGATION) TRANSMISSIONS AVAILABLE FROM A RELATIVELY SMALL NUMBER OF TRANSMITTER REFERENCE SITES. ANY GIVEN VEHICLE DERIVES DATA REPRESENTATIVE OF ITS POSITION WITH RESPECT TO THREE OF THE REFERENCE TRANSMITTERS, AND RELAYS THIS INFORMATION TO A CENTRAL LOCATION. THE LOCATION OF THE VEHICLE IS THEN COMPUTED. /NTIS/
