ELDERLY RIDERSHIP AND REDUCED TRANSIT FARES: THE CHICAGO EXPERIENCE

THE PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT WAS TO DETERMINE THE IMPACT OF A REDUCED TRANSPORTATION FARE PROGRAM ON THE ECONOMIC AND CULTURAL PATTERNS OF THE ELDERLY AND THE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM ITSELF, AND TO PROVIDE FOR SYSTEMATIC DATA THAT WOULD ENABLE OTHER MUNICIPALITIES TO DETERMINE THE FEASIBILITY OF A REDUCED MASS TRANSIT RATE FOR THE ELDERLY. INFORMATION REGARDING TRAVEL BEHAVIOR AND CERTAIN SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE AGED WAS COLLECTED BY USE OF A QUESTIONNAIRE ADMINISTERED IN GROUP SETTING. IN ADDITION A SAMPLE OF THE AGED REPORTED ON THEIR USE OF TRANSPORTATION FACILITIES BEFORE AND AFTER A REDUCED FARE PLAN. ACTUAL COUNTS OF NUMBERS OF OLDER PEOPLE BOARDING SELECTED TRANSPORTATION VEHICLES WERE TAKEN. THE FINDINGS OF THE SURVEY WERE RELATED TO SPECIFIC MONTHS IN THE YEAR, INCREASE OF TRAVEL, OTHER METHODS OF CONVEYENCE, EMPLOYMENT OF RESPONDENTS, SOCIALIZATION, AND OTHER VARIABLES. SPECIFIC PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED IN RESEARCH METHODOLOGY ARE REPORTED. /NTIS/
