New developments of driver assessment in Poland

Each year about 4,000 - 5,000 people are killed in road accidents in Poland. The costs of road accidents in Poland are among the highest in the European Union. The World Bank report estimated that the Polish economy loses about 7 billion Euro per year due to traffic accidents. As a result of the gaps in the road safety system Poland shows one of the highest casualty rates and is perceived as one of the most dangerous member states in the EU. This is the cause of the increasing role of traffic psychology and changes in the Polish law system. On January 5, 2011 the Polish Parliament passed the Vehicle Drivers Act, which is to be introduced on 11 February 2013. This act changes the scope of the psychological examinations of the vehicle drivers, also introducing obligatory educational actions. The regulation requires a new approach to develop suitable solutions for traffic psychology. The paper presents the Polish road safety system and new approaches that are currently being developed by the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Transport and relevant research organizations. (A)
