Road Tunnel Safety: HGV Driver Training in France
Securite des Tunnels Routiers: Formation des Conducteurs de PL en France
Generally speaking, drivers do not adopt the expected behavior in tunnels, particularly in cases of fire. This led the French Tunnel Research Centre (CETU) to undertake a research program on the role of human and organizational factors in road tunnel safety over the period 2004 to 2009. This research program, with the key aim of improving the user communication and training system, has largely built upon the results of the "ACTEURS" project (Improve Links between Tunnels, Operators and Users to Increase Safety) carried out concurrently by several toll motorway company operators. This paper presents the actions focusing on communication and training and highlights the synergies that underpinned its successful completion.
