WILL THE COMPUTER REDRESS THE IMBALANCE OF WORLD SHIPBUILDING COMPETITION

Some of the possibilities of the computer in the design and production of ships are described, including pure ship-design calculations, fairing of hull surfaces, numerically controlled cutting of steel plate, and structural analysis. The implications of data systems, time-sharing and computer graphics are discussed as a source of changes in the shipyard as well as in the classification society and the office of the consultant naval architect.
