THIS MANUAL, WHICH CONSISTS OF FIVE INTERRELATED SECTIONS, HAS BEEN COMPILED WITH THE INTENTION OF PRESENTING INFORMATION ON KEY QUESTIONS FOR MANAGEMENT IN MEETING THE ISSUE OF THE SHORTER WORKWEEK. A CONSIDERATION OF THE SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC IMPLICATIONS BRIEFLY ANALYZES SUCH ASPECTS AS THE CHOICES INVOLVED, THE ECONOMICS OF EMPLOYMENT, TECHNOLOGICAL PROGRESS AND PRODUCTIVITY, THE COST OF REDUCED WORK HOURS, HISTORICAL TRENDS, EFFICIENCY EFFECTS, EFFECTS ON CONSUMPTION, WORKER FATIGUE, AND THE SOCIAL IMPLICATIONS. FACTUAL MATERIAL IS PROVIDED TO SUPPORT THE AREAS ANALYZED. STATEMENTS AND OPINIONS MADE BY MANAGEMENT, LABOR AND OTHERS ARE PRESENTED. AS THE DRIVE FOR THE SHORTER WORKWEEK GAINS MOMENTUM, THE INADEQUACY OF "PURCHASING POWER" OR REAL INCOME IS BECOMING EVIDENT.
