Study of Capacity Analysis Method of Signalized Intersections for Effectiveness Analysis of Exclusive Median Bus Lanes

A capacity analysis methodology and an effect analysis methodology of signalized intersections including Exclusive Median Bus Lanes (EMBLs) were developed in this study. In order to develop the method firstly it is required to understand operation characteristics of EMBLs. Through analyzing the difference of operation characteristics between normal lanes and EMBLs, it was found that the estimation of the basic saturation flow rate of EMBLs is needed and upstream bus-stop was chosen as major factor which can influence the saturation flow rate of EMBLs. Eight signalized intersections in Seoul were chosen as study sites and the saturation headway, distance between bus-stop and stop-line, and grade were investigated. The basic saturation headway and the basic saturation flow rate of EMBLs were 3.27 s/veh and 1,100pc/h/ln, respectively. Adjustment factor of bus-stop was estimated 0.50 and 0.75 when the distance between bus-stop and stop-line are 20m and 70m, respectively. Delay reduction of passengers using EMBLs which can be considered as the benefit of EMBLs and the number of people in buses were also included in the proposed effect analysis method. It was also found that the proposed effect analysis methodology demonstrates the effectiveness that MOE of signalized intersections is changed to "sec/person".
