THE BOOK IS A GUIDE TO THE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT OF THE CITY PRESENTED IN THE WAY IN WHICH VISITORS AND CITIZENS SEE AND EXPERIENCE IT. EACH OF THE FOUR SECTIONS OF THE BOOK, WHICH HAS BEEN PREPARED WITH BOTH THE COMMON TOURIST AND THE ARCHITECTURALLY ORIENTED VISITOR IN MIND, PROVIDES GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE HISTORIC BACKGROUND OF THE CITY. ARCHITECTURE IS USED AS A VISUAL LANDMARK TO HELP IDENTIFY SPECIFIC LOCATIONS AND AREAS. THE MAPS WHICH HAVE BEEN DESIGNED FOR EASY UNDERSTANDING, CONTAIN COMPLETE LOCATIONAL INFORMATION FOR ALL SIGNIFICANT BUILDINGS IN THE CITY. NAMES OF ARCHITECTS AND DATES OF CONSTRUCTION ARE INCLUDED IN THE INDEX TO THE MAPS. THE FIRST TWO SECTIONS OF THE BOOK COMPRISE A GUIDE FOLLOWING MAJOR ROUTES, KEY AREAS SUCH AS PARKS, DOWNTOWN, UNIVERSITY, HISTORIC AND RESIDENTIAL SECTIONS ARE REPRESENTED. THE THIRD SECTION OF THE BOOK DESCRIBES THE HISTORIC PATTERNS OF GROWTH AND THE REGIONAL CONTEXT. MUSEUMS, PARKS, AND HISTORIC SITES ARE DESCRIBED IN RELATION TO THEIR HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT AND TO TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS. THE LAST SECTION OF THE BOOK INCLUDES KEY HISTORIC PLANS DEVELOPED TO GUIDE THE CITY'S GROWTH. EXAMPLES OF ARCHITECTURE PAST AND PRESENT AND DESCRIPTIONS OF OUTSTANDING INTERIOR DESIGN ARE ALSO INCLUDED.
