THE ACCESSIBLE CITY

A CONSTRUCTIVE APPROACH TO THE APPLICATION OF TRANSPORTATION TECHNOLOGY AND A BROADER UNDERSTANDING OF THE CAUSES OF CONGESTION COULD INITIATE A NEW ERA OF CITY BUILDING IN WHICH THE MANY OTHER BASIC PROBLEMS OF URBAN SOCIETY WOULD HAVE A BETTER CHANCE OF SOLUTION. RAPID TRANSIT IS REINFORCING THE MOVE TOWARD THE UNMANAGEABLE METROPOLIS, AND MEASURES TO ACCOMMODATE THE AUTOMOBILE ARE HASTENING COMMUNITY DISSOLUTION. THE QUESTION FOR PUBLIC POLICY MAKERS IS HOW THE ABILITY TO MOVE FREELY WITHIN THE CITY AND IN OR OUT OF IT CAN MAKE URBAN GOALS EASIER TO OBTAIN. PLANNED CITIES AND URBAN REDEVELOPMENT AROUND THE WORLD DEMONSTRATE NEW APPROACHES TO LIVING AND MOVING THAT CAN BE APPLIED IN EXISTING CITIES. /AUTHOR/
