METROPOLITAN TRANSPORTATION PLANNING SEMINARS

AT THE REQUEST OF DOT, THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF PLANNERS ASSISTED IN CARRYING OUT A SERIES OF SEMINARS TO SECURE A VARIETY OF LOCAL OPINIONS OF THE TRANSPORTATION PLANNING PROCESS. THIS PAPER SUMMARIZES THE SEMINARS' FORMAL PAPERS, WORKSHOP SESSIONS AND DISCUSSION PERIODS TO EVALUATE THE PLANNING PROCESS AND TO DEVELOP POSITIVE PROPOSALS TO IMPROVE THAT PROCESS. PROFESSIONAL PLANNERS, ARCHITECTS, ELECTED OFFICIALS, CITIZENS AND GOVERNMENT REPRESENTATIVES REVIEWED TRANSPORTATION AND LAND DEVELOPMENT PROBLEMS WITH SPECIFIC REFERENCE TO THEIR LOCAL SEVERAL POINTS STAND OUT: (1) THERE IS A GROWING AWARENESS FOR IMMEDIATE CONCERN TOWARDS UNCONTROLLED DEVELOPMENT OF LAND IN METROPOLITAN AREAS; (2) A NEED FOR THE CONSOLIDATION OF PLANNING EFFORTS TO ELIMINATE DUPLICATION AND CROSS-PURPOSE PLANNING; (3) INCREASED SENSITIVITY TOWARDS THE GENERAL PUBLIC (4) POLICIES AND FUNDS ARE URGENTLY NEEDED TO DEAL WITH THE PROBLEM OF LOCAL TRANSPORTATION.
