INVESTIGATION INTO AND PREVENTION OF LANDSLIDE CAUSED BY CONSTRUCTION WORKS SUCH AS TUNNELS, DAMS OR OTHER STRUCTURES

LANDSLIDES ARE FREQUENTLY INDUCED BY CONSTRUCTION WORKS, SUCH AS THE CHANGING OF EXISTING GROUND SLOPE DUE TO EXCAVATION OF TUNNELS AND DAM FOUNDATIONS. IF THE PROPOSED TUNNEL OR DAM IS TO BE LOCATED UPON OR ACROSS A POTENTIAL LANDSLIDE AREA IT IS NECESSARY TO DETERMINE WHETHER THE AREA WILL REMAIN STABLE UNDER THE CONDITIONS IMPOSED BY THE CONSTRUCTION WORKS. IN EXCAVATING A TUNNEL IN A POTENTIAL LANDSLIDE AREA, DEFORMATIONS OF THE SIDEWALL HEADING WERE OBSERVED. THESE DEFORMATIONS AFFECTED THE GROUND SURFACE, AND WERE A POTENTIAL LANDSLIDE DANGER. AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHIC AND FIELD SURVEYS WERE CARRIED OUT FOR STUDYING THE GEOMORPHOLOGICAL AND GEOLOGICAL CHARACTERS OF THE LOCATION. SEISMIC PROSPECTING ALONG TWO LINES WERE CONDUCTED TO OBTAIN DATA ON THE DEPTH OF THE BED ROCK. SLIDING MOVEMENTS AND SLOPING MOTIONS ON THE GROUND SURFACE WERE MEASURED BY MEANS OF WIRE EXTENSOMETERS AND SLOPEMETERS. AN INTERNAL STRAIN GAUGE MEASURED SUBSURFACE DEFORMATIONS. COUNTERS WERE INSERTED INTO BOREHOLES TO RECORD THE FREQUENCY OF ROCK CRUSHING SOUND CAUSED BY LANDSLIDES. ON THE BASIS OF THE ANALYSIS OF THE DATA RECORDED, THE UPPER HEADING WAS EXCAVATED, IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWED BY THE CONCRETE LINING. THE ROCK BEHAVIOUR DURING EXCAVATION AND APPLICATION WAS MEASURED, AND CONSIDERATION GIVEN TO LANDSLIDES. THE METHODS USED AND THE RESULTS OF THE INVESTIGATION AND OBSERVATIONS ARE DISCUSSED.
