MODERN PILING: PART TWO-ATTENUATION OF GROUND VIBRATIONS FROM PILE DRIVING

AN INSTRUMENT HAS BEEN DESIGNED FRO IN-SITU TESTING OF SOILS WHICH IS INTENDED PARTICULARLY FOR USE IN SOFT, SENSITIVE CLAYS, AND WHICH YIELDS MOST OF THE PARAMETERS DESCRIBING SOIL BEHAVIOR REQUIRED IN BUILDING AND CIVIL ENGINEERING OPERATIONS. THE INSTRUMENT, WHICH ACTS AS A MINIATURE TUNNELLING MACHINE, CAN BE DRIVEN TO THE REQUIRED POSITION FOR TESTING, AVOIDING THE DISTURBANCE OF THE SORROUNDING SOIL WHICH WOULD ALTER THE PROPERTIES TO BE MEASURED. THE INSTRUMENT PROBE CARRIES AN OUTER CYLINDRICAL RUBBER MEMBRANE WHICH CAN BE EXPANDED QUICKLY TO DEFORM THE SOIL AT CONSTANT VOLUME, OR SLOWLY TO ALLOW DISSIPATION OF ANY EXCESS PORE PRESSURE. THE APPLICATION OF THE EQUIPMENT ON A TYPICAL QUICK EXPANSION TEST ON QUICK CLAY IS DESCRIBED. FIGURES ARE PRESENTED WHICH ILLUSTRATE THE USE OF THE EQUIPMENT. A FURTHER SIMILAR PIECE OF EQUIPMENT IS DESCRIBED WHICH CAN BE USED FOR THE PRECISE MEASUREMENT OF IN-SITU LATERAL STREESES. IN THIS MODIFICATION, LOAD CELL MOUNTED FLUSH WITH THE CYLINDRICAL SURFACE OF THE INSTRUMENT REPLACE THE EXPANDABLE MEMBRANE. A SPECIAL DRILLING RIG FOR INSERTING THE INSTRUMENT TO DEPTHS OF 15 M. IS AVAILABLE, AS IS ALSO, A FIELD RECORDING SYSTEM.
