RESEARCH ON DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION METHODS OF TUNNEL STRUCTURES INCLUDE: (1) MODEL TESTS AND IN-SITU MEASUREMENTS OF VERTICAL DISPLACEMENT OF ROCK DUE TO TUNNEL STRUCTURES; (2) LARGE SCALE MODEL EXPERIMENTS ON STRENGTHS AND KINEMATIC CHARACTERISTICS OF CONCRETE ARCH LININGS AND CO-OPERATING EFFECTS OF STEEL ARCH SUPPORT AND CONCRETE--TO RATIONALIZE THE DESIGN METHOD OF CONCRETE LINING OF TUNNELS; (3) LARGE SCALE MODEL EXPERIMENTS OF SAND JETTING WHICH IS ONE OF THE FOUNDATION CONSTRUCTION METHODS OF IMMERSED TUNNELS-- TO ESTABLISH THE OPERATING SYSTEM; (4) INSTRUMENTATION AND MEASUREMENTS IN AN ACTUAL TUNNEL TO OBTAIN THE INFLUENCE OF BEARING CAPACITY AND SETTLEMENT OF TUNNEL FOUNDATION ON STRESS DISTRIBUTION IN TUNNEL SECTIONS; AND (5) TESTS ON RUBBER GASKETS FOR JOINT OF TUNNEL TUBES TO CLARIFY THEIR KINEMATIC CHARACTERISTICS, WATERTIGHTNESS AND SO ON. RESEARCH ON DESIGN AND CONTROL SYSTEMS OF SERVICE EQUIPMENTS OF VEHICULAR TUNNELS INCLUDE: (1) MEASUREMENTS OF CO AND SMOKE DENSITY IN ACTUAL TUNNELS-- TO OBTAIN THE RELATION BETWEEN TRAFFIC PATTERNS AND AIR POLLUTION IN TUNNELS AND RATIONALIZE THE DESIGN AND CONTROL METHODS OF VENTILATION SYSTEMS; AND (2) MEASUREMENTS OF NOISE FROM TRAFFIC AND VENTILATION EQUIPMENT IN ACTUAL VEHICULAR TUNNELS TO ESTABLISH THE DESIGN METHOD OF NOISE CONTROL SYSTEMS IN VEHICULAR TUNNELS.
