THE AUTHORS DISCUSS OPTIMIZATION PROBLEMS IN THE DESIGN OF RETAINING WALLS. DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS HAVE BEEN APPLIED TO THE DESIGN OF THE FRONT WALLS OF BUTTRESS-TYPE RETAINING WALLS. PROBLEMS ARISING FROM THE APPLICATON OF STANDARD APPROXIMATE METHODS ARE OUTLINED, AND METHODS OF SELECTING RETAINING WALL INTERVALS ARE DISCUSSED.
