TUNNELLING MACHINE EMBODIES BENTONITE FACILITIES

THE USE OF BENTONITE MUD UNDER PRESSURE FOR CONTINUOUS FACE STABILIZATION IS TO BE INCORPORATED IN AN EXPERIMENTAL TUNNELING SHIELD FOR DRIVING LARGE-DIAMETER TUBE TUNNELS. THE REMOVAL OF THE SPOIL SUSPENDED IN THE BENTONITE SLURRY IS CARRIED OUT BY MEANS OF A PIPELINE TO THE SURFACE AND THE PROVISION OF ADEQUATE PUMPING FACILITIES. THIS NEW MACHINE IS SUITABLE FOR OPERATION IN SAND AND GRAVEL, AND BELOW THE GROUND WATER TABLE. IT WILL BE TESTED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF A 185M-LONG TRIAL TUNNEL ON THE ALIGNMENT OF THE PROPOSED NEW FLEET LINE AT NEW CROSS, SOUTH OF THE RIVER THAMES IN LONDON. /TRRL/
