CHOICE OF AN UPPER LIMIT OF MOISTURE CONTENT FOR HIGHWAY EARTHWORKS

A METHOD IS SUGGESTED FOR OBTAINING A SUITABLE UPPER MOISTURE CONTENT FOR COHESIVE MATERIALS. IN CONSIDERING WHETHER OR NOT A MATERIAL IS USABLE, THE THREE FOLLOWING CRITICAL FACTORS MUST BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT (1) LIMIT FOR PLANT RUNNING ON THE MATERIAL AND WORKING IT, (2) STABILITY OF BANKS, AND (3) EXTENT OF SETTLEMENT. FACTORS 1 AND 2 ARE DEPENDENT ON SHEAR STRENGTH AND CAN BE RELATED TO THE PLASTIC LIMIT OF THE MATERIAL. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE PLASTIC LIMIT TEST USED FOR CONTROL PURPOSES, AND ATTENTION IS DRAWN TO THE POSSIBILITY OF ERRORS IN THE RESULTS DUE TO THE SMALL SIZE OF THE SAMPLE AND POSSIBLE MISHANDLING BY THE OPERATOR. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THE VALUES OBTAINED IN THE PLASTIC LIMIT TEST BE COMPARED WITH THOSE OBTAINED WITH CBR VALUES. GUIDELINES ARE GIVEN FOR INCORPORATING A SUITABLE CHART IN THE CONTRACT DOCUMENTS. A BRIEF MENTION IS MADE OF AN APPROACH DESIGNED FOR GRANULAR MATERIALS, FOR WHICH THE UPPER LIMIT OF MOISTURE CONTENT SHOULD BE QUOTED IN TERMS OF OPTIMUM MOISTURE CONTENT. /TRRL/
