RAMSHOR SYSTEM TO RATIONALISE TRENCHING

TRENCH SHORING, REFILLING AND COMPACTING CAN BE CARRIED OUT BY ONE PIECE OF EQUIPMENT, THE RAMSHOR. THE MACHINE, DEVELOPED BY HUDSWELL MORRICE LTD., HARROGATE, IS A HYDRAULIC SHIELD CONSISTING OF TWO STEEL WALLS HELD APART BY CROSS STRUTS. THE SIDE WALLS EXTEND FORWARD FOR 2.4M AND ARE TAPERED TO CUTTING EDGES. THE LARGE HORIZONTAL CROSS MEMBER IS SIMILARLY TAPERED TO CUTTING EDGES. TWO RAM OPERATED DEFLECTOR PLATES ARE HINGED AT THEIR FORWARD ENDS TO THIS CROSS MEMBER AND CONTROL THE LEVEL OF THE MACHINE. MACHINE LINE IS CONTROLLED BY DEFLECTOR PLATES WITHIN THE SIDE WALL PROJECTIONS. THE REAR WALLS PROJECT 1.2M. A VERTICAL THRUST PLATE EXTENDS THE FULL WIDTH AND DEPTH OF THE MACHINE AND CAN IMPART A FORWARD THRUST OF 120 TONS. THE RAMSHOR SITS IN AND SUPPORTS THE UPPER SECTION OF AN ORTHODOX STEPPED TRENCH. INTERLOCKING SHEET STEEL PANELS ARE CARRIED IN VERTICAL FRAMES TO PROVIDE SUPPORT FOR THE LOWER SECTION OF THE TRENCH. A HEAVY PLATFORM DESIGNED TO SUPPORT AN EXCAVATOR IS CARRIED LIKE A DRAWBRIDGE AT THE FRONT OF THE MACHINE. WORK RATES ARE CLAIMED TO BE UP TO 18.3 M OF LARGE DIAMETER PIPING LAID IN ONE DAY BY THREE MEN AND THE EQUIPMENT INCLUDING TRENCH OPENING AND CLOSING. THE TWO STAGE EXCAVATION METHOD IS DESCRIBED, OTHER USES FOR THE MACHINE ARE BOX CULVERTS IN TRENCHES. /TRRL/
