A REVIEW OF STRUCTURAL DIAPHRAGM WALLS

THIS REVIEW IS AN INTRODUCTION TO THE PRINCIPLES AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE SLURRY TRENCH TECHNIQUE OF EXCAVATION AND SUBSEQUENT DIAPHRAGM WALL INSTALLATION. IT ALSO DETAILS SITE PROCEDURES DEVELOPED AS THE RESULT OF SPECIALIST CONTRACTURAL EXPERIENCE. THE MAIN ADVANTAGES OF THE TECHNIQUE ARE THE LACK OF DISTURBANCE OF THE GROUND OR ADJACENT STRUCTURES DURING EXCAVATION, THE ABILITY TO OPERATE IN GROUND CONDITIONS WHERE THE NECESSITY FOR COMPLICATED AND COSTLY EXCAVATION SUPPORT WOULD OTHERWISE RENDER WALL CONSTRUCTION IMPOSSIBLE, AND THE DEPTH AND SPEED OF CONSTRUCTION. THE REVIEW EXAMINES THE DESIGN OF STRUCTURAL DIAPHRAGM WALLS AND THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF THE PROCESS. IT FURTHER CONSIDERS THE PROPERTIES OF BENTONITE, THE THEORY OF TRENCH STABILITY AND PRELIMINARY CONSTRUCTION PROCEDURES AND DESCRIBES THE PANEL EXCAVATION AND CONSTRUCTION OF THE WALL. AN APPENDIX ILLUSTRATES SOME OF THE MORE INTERESTING AND UNUSUAL STRUCTURAL DIAPHRAGM WALL CONTRACTS COMPLETED AROUND THE WORLD. /CSIRO/
