GEOTECHNICS AND GEOTECHNICAL RESEARCH

IT IS PROPOSED TO USE THE TERM GEOTECHNICS TO DESIGNATE THE APPLICATION OF THE PRINCIPLES OF MECHANICS, PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY, PHYSICS, AND MINERALOGY TO THE PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH THE USE OF SOILS. THE FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPTS OF PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY ARE PRESENTED FOR THE BENEFIT OF SOILS ENGINEERS. IONS, SPACE LATTICES, BASE EXCHANGE, AND ELECTROOSMOSIS ARE PRESENTED PRINCIPALLY FROM A STRUCTURAL, RATHER THAN A CHEMICAL POINT OF VIEW. THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF CLAY ARE DESCRIBED AND THEIR BEHAVIOR EXPLAINED IN TERMS OF THEIR PHYSICOCHEMISTRY. /AUTHOR/
