DISCUSSION OF LIQUID LIMIT VALUES BY SOIL MOISTURE TENSION

THE AUTHORS' SUPPORTING THEORETICAL PRESENTATION EMPLOYED SEVERAL HYPOTHESES, ADVANCED BY OTHERS, THAT ARE GENERALLY INCONSLUSIVE AND ARE CURRENTLY UNDERGOING RIGOROUS EXAMINATION FROM A FUNDAMENTAL PHYSICOCHEMICAL APPROACH. RECENT TEST DATA ARE PRESENTED IN WHICH SIGNIFICANTLY DIFFERENT TENSION VALUES WERE OBTAINED FOR CERTAIN SOILS. IT CONCLUDES THAT THE MOISTURE TENSION TECHNIQUE NEEDS A GOOD DEAL OF REFINEMENT BEFORE IT CAN BE USED CONSISTENTLY TO ESTIMATE LL VALUES.
