Simultaneous Reduction of Fuel Consumption, Exhaust Emission and Combustion Noise by Using Injection Rate Shaping for Diesel Engines
Since improvement of fuel consumption and exhaust emissions involves deterioration of combustion noise, this becomes a big issue for future diesel engines in terms of product quality improvement. In this study, simultaneous reduction of fuel consumption, nitrogen oxides (NOx), soot emission and combustion noise was attempted by using multiple-injection and injection rate shaping. The piezo direct drive injector can control injection shape flexibility. The combination multiple-injection and rate shaping injection made effective noise reduction possible without deterioration of NOx and soot emission. The study suggests that fuel consumption can be improved by multiple and rate shaping injection, advancement injection timing and increasing injection pressure with low combustion noise.
