NOTE: PROCESSING AND PLOTTING OF LABORATORY PARTICLE-SIZE DATA BY DIGITAL COMPUTER

COMPUTER PROGRAMS ARE DESCRIBED AND PRESENTED WHICH ARE USED TO DETERMINE PARTICLE-SIZE ANALYSES. FORTRAN IV PROGRAMS ARE USED BY THE IBM 360 COMPUTER TO CALCULATE VARIOUS PARTICLE-SIZE WEIGHT PERCENTAGES FROM LABORATORY DATA OBTAINED USING THE PIPETT METHOD OF KILMER AND ALEXANDER. IDENTIFICATION NUMBERS, BEAKER, TARE, CONTAINER, SIEVED SAND AND PIPETTED SOIL ALIQUOT (AFTER DRYING) WEIGHTS AND FIELD TEXTURAL CLASSES ARE RECORDED ON CARD LAYOUT FORMS FROM WHICH DATA ARE PUNCHED ON IBM CARDS. THE FIRST PHASE OF THE PROGRAM CALCULATES THE SAMPLE WEIGHT PERCENTAGES OF VERY COARSE, COARSE, MEDIUM, FINE, AND VERY FINE SAND FRACTIONS, SILTS AND THE TOTAL SAND, SILT AND CLAY WEIGHT PERCENTAGES, AND USES THESE DATA TO PLACE THE SAMPLE INTO ONE OF THE TWENTY-ONE USDA TEXTURAL CLASSES. COMPUTERIZED PLOTTING ROUTINES ARE USED TO CONSTRUCT THE USDA TEXTURAL TRIANGLE, WITH OR WITHOUT THE TEXTURAL CLASS NAMES, AND TO PLOT DATA FROM THE PARTICLE-SIZE ANALYSIS ON THIS TRIANGLE USING THE CALCOMP PLOTTER. DATA POINTS CAN BE PLOTTED AS NUMBERS, SYMBOLS, ACTUAL HORIZON DESIGNATIONS, OR ANY COMBINATIONS OF THESE. THIS PROGRAM ALSO HAS THE CAPABILITY OF PLOTTING A SEPARATE TEXTURAL CLASS, POSITIONING THE TEXTURAL CLASS NAME, AND PLOTTING DATA ONTO THIS SECTION.
