DISCUSSION OF PROPERTY INTERRELATIONSHIPS IN SENSITIVE CLAYS

THE AUTHORS ARE COMMENDED ON THE PRESENTATION OF THE RELATIONSHIPS OF SOIL PROPERTIES WITH THE SENSITIVITY OF CLAY. HOWEVER, THE DISCUSSER FEELS THAT SOME OF THE SOIL PROPERTIES NEED TO BE DEFINED MORE PRECISELY. HE PRESENTS TERZAGHI'S DEFINITION OF LIQUIDITY INDEX AND ACTIVITY. HE STATES THAT THE SENSITIVITY OF A SOIL TO REMOLDING IS MEASURED BY THE RATIO OF THE UNDRAINED, UNCONFINED COMPRESSIVE STRENGTHS BEFORE AND AFTER REMOLDING. COMMENTS ARE DESIRED ON THE RELATIONSHIPS OF THIXOTROPY, CATION EXCHANGE CAPACITY AND SPECIFIC SURFACE TO SENSITIVITY OF CLAY. REFERENCES: PROPERTY INTERRELATIONSHIPS IN SENSITIVE CLAYS, WILLIAM N.
