ELECTROKINETIC STABILIZATION OF AN ILLITIC CLAY-CLOSURE

DISCUSSERS HAVE INDICATED THE IMPORTANCE OF CONSIDERING PH CHANGES DURING ELECTROKINETIC TREATMENT WHEN AN ASSESSMENT IS MADE OF THE CAUSES OF ANY OBSERVED SOIL STRENGTHENING. THE DISCUSSION CENTERS ABOUT THE REASON FOR THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PH 7 AND SOIL HARDENING. MISE MEASURED THE PORE WATER PRESSURE DURING ELECTROKINETIC TREATMENT AND NOTED THAT THE NEGATIVE PORE WATER PRESSURES THAT DEVELOPED WERE RELATED TO THE POSITION OF THE LAYER OF DISCONTINUITY OF PH 7. SOME RECENT WORK BY ESRIG INDICATES THAT HIGH VOLTAGE GRADIENTS WITHIN THE SOIL MASS SHOULD PRODUCE NEGATIVE PORE WATER PRESSURES. THUS, IT WOULD ALSO APPEAR THAT THE ZONE OF PH 7 IS FREQUENTLY ASSOCIATED WITH CONSOLIDATING STRESSES RESULTING FROM ELECTROKINETIC TREATMENT. THE AUTHORS ATTEMPTED TO ELIMINATE THE AFFECTS OF WATER CONTENT CHANGES AND WERE LEFT THEN WITH A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ELECTROCHEMICAL HARDENING AND PH OR LIQUID LIMIT.
