ON THE DRAINAGE OF MUCEQUE - COLLAPSING SOIL

THE STUDY OF THE CAUSES OF SOIL SUBSIDENCES WHICH OCCURRED ALONG THE RUNWAY OF THE LUANDA AIRFIELD HAS SHOWN THAT IN FERRUGINOUS SANDY-CLAYEY COLLAPSING SOILS, THERE IS A DANGER NOT ONLY OF THE POSSIBILITY OF THE WASHING AWAY OF SOILS THROUGH FAILURE OF THE DRAINAGE SYSTEM, BUT ALSO THE COLLAPSE (EXCEPTIONAL SETTLEMENTS UNDER SMALL LOADS) OF THE SOIL WHEN BREAKS IN THE DRAINS TENDS TO SATURATE THE ADJACENT SOIL. ON ACCOUNT OF THIS IT IS ADVISED TO ADOPT SURFACE DRAINAGE FOR RAIN WATER, OR TO FORESEE A DRAINAGE SUITABLE FOR BEARING-STRESSES WITHOUT OPENING CRACKS THAT GIVE PASSAGE TO THE WATER. /RRL/A/
