EFFECTS OF NEUTRON-GAMMA IRRADIATION ON PHYSICO-CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF FINE GRAINED SOILS

THE RESULTS OF TESTS ARE PRESENTED THAT WERE MADE TO DETERMINE THE EFFECTS OF TWO LEVELS OF NEUTRON-GAMMA IRRADIATION ON THE PHYSICO-CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF THREE FINE-GRAINED SOILS. STUDIES OF THE INDUCED RADIOACTIVITY AND CHANGES IN HYDROGEN ION CONCENTRATION, CONDUCTIVITY, MINERALOGICAL CONTENT, STRENGTH CHARACTERISTICS, ATTERBERG LIMITS, COMPACTION CHARACTERISTICS AND SOIL STRUCTURE AS DETERMINED WITH THE ELECTRON MICROSCOPE ARE REPORTED. WITH REGARD TO THE OBSERVED SAFETY AND VERSATILITY OF THE NUCLEAR METHODS EMPLOYED IN DETERMINING THE IRRADIATION EFFECTS ON SOIL, SEVERAL PROMISING SOILS ENGINEERING APPLICATIONS OF NUCLEAR METHODS ARE RECOMMENDED. /AUTHOR/
