PORE PRESSURES AT A PENETRATING FROST LINE AND THEIR PREDICTION

AN APPARATUS HAS BEEN CONSTRUCTED FOR DETERMINING PORE PRESSURES DEVELOPED IMMEDIATELY BELOW A PENETRATING FROST LINE. TESTS HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT WITH NATURAL SOILS, GRADED FRACTIONS, AND CERAMIC DISCS UNDER VARIOUS CONFINING PRESSURES. THE AIR-INTRUSION VALUE OF THE SAME MATERIALS HAS ALSO BEEN MEASURED. IT IS SHOWN THAT A RELATIONSHIP EXISTS BETWEEN THE AIR-INTRUSION VALUE FOR A GIVEN SOIL, AND THE PORE PRESSURE DEVELOPED AT THE PENETRATING FROST LINE. THIS CAN BE EXPLAINED FROM THE EFFECTS OF PORE SIZE IN DETERMINING THE RADII OF ICE-WATER AND AIR-WATER INTERFACES AND THE RELATIONSHIP SUGGESTS A CONVENIENT TEST FOR DETERMINING THE SUSCEPTIBILITY OF A SOIL TO FROST HEAVE. /RRL/A/
