PLANE STRAIN BEHAVIOR OF REMOLDED NORMALLY CONSOLIDATED KAOLIN

THE RESULTS OF EIGHTEEN PLANE STRAIN TESTS PERFORMED ON SATURATED REMOLDED NORMALLY CONSOLIDATED KAOLIN IN THE BIAXIAL APPARATUS ARE PRESENTED. A WIDE VARIETY OF EFFECTIVE STRESS PATHS WERE IMPOSED WHICH INCLUDED AN INITIAL PHASE OF ONE-DIMENSIONAL OR TWO-DIMENSIONAL CONSOLIDATION FROM A SLURRY FOLLOWED BY A SHEAR STAGE IN WHICH THE PRINCIPAL STRESS RATIO WAS EITHER INCREASED OR DECREASED WITH INTERCHANGE OF THE PRINCIPAL STRAIN AXES. THE PAPER REPORTS THE REDUCTION IN THE COMPRESSIBILITY OF THE SAMPLE DURING CONSOLIDATION, SUBSEQUENT TO A CHANGE IN THE PRINCIPAL AXIS OF STRAIN, AND ILLUSTRATES THE WIDE RANGE OF THE STRESS-STRAIN RELATION OBSERVED FOR THE DIFFERENT STRESS PATHS. AN APPROXIMATE CORRELATION BETWEEN THE STRAIN INCREMENTS AND STRESS INCREMENTS APPLIED TO THE SAMPLES IS SHOWN. FINLLY, THE OBSERVATIONS ARE COMPARED WITH THE PREDICTIONS OF THE GENERALIZED ELASTIC-PLASTIC THEORY DEVELOPED AT CAMBRIDGE. /AUTHOR/
