NEW METHODS SUCCEED AND THE BATTLE AT STRAIGHT CREEK IS OVER

A JOINT VENTURE - AL JOHNSON CONSTRUCTION CO., GIBBONS & REED CO., KEMPER CONSTRUCTION CO., AND WESTERN PAVING CONSTRUCTION CO. - FOR CONSTRUCTING THE STRAIGHT CREEK TUNNEL FOR THE COLORADO DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS IS DISCUSSED. SOME OF THE METHODS DESCRIBED ARE: (1) MINING UP TO 13 DRIFTS AROUND THE OUTSIDE OF THE BORE, FILLED WITH HEAVILY REINFORCED CONCRETE TO WITHSTAND SQUEEZING; (2) FITTING OF RAILS IN DRIFTS AT THE SPRINGLINE AND INVERT ON WHICH 13 DIFFERENT SPECIAL PURPOSE JUMBOS CAN TRAVEL; (3) USING EPOXY FOR ANCHORING ROCK ANCHORS; (4) USING HIGH-GRADE REBAR AS SPILLING OUTSIDE THE BORE; (5) USING FLEXIBLE EXPANDED METAL FORMS FOR INITIAL CROWN CONCRETING; AND (6) USING A MOVEABLE PLATE STEEL MAT OVER THE SUBINVERT SO THAT 6 YD. LOADERS COULD WORK OVER FRESH CONCRETE.
