PREDICTING THE SETTLEMENT OF STRUCTURES ERECTED ON UNSATURATED SOILS

BASED ON RESULTS FROM THEIR LABORATORY INVESTIGATION, THE AUTHORS CLAIM THAT THE RESPONSE OF UNSATURATED SOILS UNDER COMPRESSION IS OF A PURELY VISCOUS NATURE. THE SETTLEMENT OF STRUCTURES ERECTED ON THESE TYPES OF SOILS CAN BE ESTIMATED BY INTEGRATING THE VERTICAL STRAIN. SPECIFIC EXPRESSIONS ARE GIVEN FOR CASES IN WHICH A STRIP FOOTING OR A RECTANGULAR FOOTING IS INVOLVED. AUTHORS MENTION THAT COMPUTATIONAL RESULTS BASED ON THESE EXPRESSIONS ARE CONSISTENT WITH FIELD OBSERVATIONS. /AMR/
