THE HISTORY AND CORRECTION OF THE OMSI-ZOO LANDSLIDE

SEVERAL YEARS AGO EARTHWORK OPERATIONS ON A HILLSIDE SLOPE TRIGGERED A MASSIVE LANDSLIDE. IN PART THE EARTHWORK CONSISTED OF REGRADING THE UPPER PART OF THE HILLSIDE FOR THE OREGON MUSEUM OF SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY (OMSI) AND FOR THE CITY OF PORTLAND ZOO FACILITIES. ELSEWHERE, AT THE TOE OF THE SLOPE, THE EARTHWORK CONSISTED OF EXCAVATIONS TO INCREASE THE WIDTH OF A STATE HIGHWAY AND TO PROVIDE ACCESS ROADS TO THE OMSI AND ZOO FACILITIES. STUDIES OF THE SLIDE CONDUCTED BETWEEN 1957 AND 1969 ARE DESCRIBED, IN PARTICULAR THE MOST RECENT OF THESE. DESIGN FEATURES OF REMEDIAL WORK, WHICH TOOK THE FORM OF A ROCK TOE BUTTRESS, ARE DESCRIBED AND DISCUSSED, WITH SPECIAL ATTENTION TO EXCAVATION OPERATIONS.
