DISCUSSION OF DYNAMIC MODULI AND DAMPING RATIOS FOR A SOFT CLAY

WHILE THE AUTHORS ARE TO BE CONGRATULATED FOR THEIR EVALUATION OF THE SHEAR MODULUS OF CLAYS SUBJECTED TO DYNAMIC LOADING CONDITIONS, THE MODULUS OBTAINED FROM LABORATORY DYNAMIC TESTS SHOULD BE USED WITH CAUTION IN PREDICTING THE RESPONSE OF FOUNDATIONS UNDER DYNAMIC LOADING. TWO APPROACHES TO THE PROBLEM-- ONE BASED ON THE THEORY OF ELASTICITY AND THE OTHER ON TORSIONAL AND LONGITUDINAL VIBRATION TESTS---ARE CITED AS EVIDENCE THAT THE INDEPENDENT EVALUATION OF THE SHEAR MODULUS AND POISSON'S RATIO MAY NOT GIVE THE DESIRED SOIL PARAMETER WHICH IS GENERALLY NECESSARY TO PREDICT THE RESPONSE OF FOUNDATIONS SUBJECTED TO DYNAMIC LOADING.
