SEISMIC FIELD STUDY FOR THE STATE OF STRESSES OR CRACKS OR ROCK AROUND MINING OPENINGS

SOUND VELOCITY MEASUREMENTS TO STUDY THE STATE OF STRESSES OR CRACKS OF ROCK AROUND MINING OPENINGS WERE DONE AT THE WALL OF THE DRIFT IN THE ASHIO MINE AND THE PILLAR IN THE KAWAYAMA MINE IN JAPAN. A MODIFIED SONIC SYSTEM HAS BEEN DEVELOPED FOR PROBING THE ROCK AROUND MINING OPENINGS. IN THIS SYSTEM, THREE BORE-HOLES ARE REQUIRED, TWO ARE FOR THE SOUND RECEIVERS AND THE OTHER ONE IS THE SHOTHOLE IN WHICH SOUND DISTURBANCES ARE MADE BY EXPLOSIONS OF ONE OR SEVERAL ELECTRIC DETONATORS. A SILICON SEMI-CONDUCTOR STRAIN GAUGE IS USED AS THE SENSIBLE ELEMENT OF THE PROBE. RESULTS AND THE INTERPRETATIONS ON THE STATE OF STRESSES OR CRACKS OF ROCK AROUND MINING OPENINGS ARE DISCUSSED IN COMPARISON WITH THE LABORATORY MEASUREMENTS. /AUTHOR/
