THIS PAPER DEALS WITH CERTAIN SERIOUS DIFFICULTIES ENCOUNTERED IN THE APPLICATION OF FINITE ELEMENT METHODS OF ANALYSIS TO ELASTIC-PLASTIC PROBLEMS IN GEOLOGIC MATERIALS. THE APPROPRIATENESS OF PLASTICITY THEORY IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF CONSTITUTIVE EQUATIONS IS EXAMINED CRITICALLY.
