CONSTRUCTION OF HIGH-POWER ADJUSTABLE-PITCH PROPELLERS
Experiences gained in the construction of adjustable-pitch propellers for aircraft were utilized by the Institute for Ship Construction Technology to design and build such propellers for special ships that are capable of handling much higher loads than the adjustable-pitch propellers used in slow-moving freight or fishing vessels. This type of propeller adjusts automatically to the prevailing navigational conditions. It operates reliably and is especially suitable for multipropeller vessels and for vessels equipped with both Diesel and gas turbine propulsion. The propeller is manufactured by VEB Gasturbinenbau und Energiemaschinenentwickelung, Pirna (People-Owned Enterprise Gas Turbine Construction and Power Plant Development). The propeller is characterized by an increased hub diameter ratio, use of roller bearings in the propeller wings, and improved lubrication. The propeller is manufactured in the standard version and in a version that provides readout for the prevailing pitch position and a means for automatically setting and locking the propeller into a low-pitch position in case the lubricant pressure is reduced.
